Meet Me On the Porch

When I moved back to New York from the Best Coast a few years ago, I thought for a New York minute about making Brooklyn my home forever. The Borough of Kings is a great city in its own right and as the son of parents from Flatbush and Gravesend it will always kinda be home. Still, for a variety of reasons I ultimately settled instead in upper Manhattan. Since moving to Sugar Hill, the neighborhood has become my true home, not just a place to live. And now that The Porch has opened, it is even better.

The Porch at 147th and Saint Nicholas Avenue is a multi-purpose event space that puts artists first, showcasing a variety of musical styles. Once fully opened later this year, The Porch will transform as the day progresses from a cafe and locally-focused market to an after dark bar and performance space. With its cozy patio, The Porch will offer reasonably priced food, craft beers and wine and eclectic arts programming.

The new venue which pays tribute to the jazz clubs that once dotted Sugar Hill, is not just an imitation of the Harlem clubs of yore. The Porch is finding its own groove, featuring what its co-owner, Mark Miller, calls, “great music.” So far, at its two open air free Summer Concerts out on the patio that has meant a jazz performance by the Gregory Lewis “Organ Monk” Trio and an awesome world music show by Strings N’ Skins, featuring Colombian and Haitian beats.

This Friday, July 16th, The Porch returns with another free show featuring Alegba and Friends. In addition to a terrific summer line up, the concert series offers a delicious limited menu of food, craft beers and refrescos provided by Hex and Company.

Given what we have all been through, we need to get out more. The Porch, on the A, B, C and D train at 145th Street (147th St. exit) and St Nicholas Avenue, is just what Dr. Fauci ordered. Pull up a chair this Friday for a night of terrific music and food.

Yours in transit,

Joel
